The first thing you will need to do is get set up before trying to get any customers. You will need a computer with Internet access, a phone, a fax machine, and a good bookkeeping program. QuickBooks is highly recommended by most employers looking to contract out this type of work. It is known to be easy to use and maintain. If you have never used it before, familiarize yourself with it before getting your first job. Other things you will need to learn are how to Enter customer information and how to create one, Enter expenses and income information, Enter payroll information, Enter tax information, Invoice, Run reports.
If you have prior experience being a bookkeeper, then these are skills that you will already know how to do. This will give you a jumpstart to finding work at home. There are several ways to get customers for your bookkeeping service. Put an ad in the newspaper. Major newspapers are somewhat expensive, so consider starting out with an ad in a "penny saver" newspaper. Make your ad professional, but also be creative with it. Remember there are a lot of other people out there doing the same thing.
Be sure and write how long you have been doing bookkeeping. Do not put your fees in the ad. You should discuss this with potential employers when the time is right. One of best ways to get new clients is word of mouth. Ask friends, relatives, neighbors, if they know anyone that needs a bookkeeping service. Be sure and have business cards printed and on-hand with you at all times. It may be easier in the beginning to find clients locally. Look in your local phone book.
Find some businesses you think might need your services. Painting companies, contractors, small shops, and landscaping are just a few possibilities. Compose a letter marketing your services. You want to stress why they should choose you over another bookkeeping service. List your qualifications and stress the benefits of your being nearby their location, so you can be available for office meetings and for other occasions. Mail these out and include your business card in them. You will need to discuss with your potential client the benefits of your service. Make your first impression count.
Tell them that with your services you can reduce their tax liabilities, make them higher profits through management controls, and improved cash flow. And most of all give them peace of mind. Tell them about all the management reports you can give them to help them run their business more profitably. Doing bookkeeping from home is a great idea, but it can be challenging to start. Once you find your first client, you'll be amazed at how your business will grow. Don't give up trying to get that first client.
