Capital of the North: One of the English Core Cities Group, Manchester is famous for more than just being the world’s first industrialized town. Today, Manchester is a world famous center for popular arts and higher education. Manchester is now regarded as the ‘world’s fastest growing city-economically’, according to a survey. It is also heralded as the third most visited city in the United Kingdom and home to the premier league football teams: Manchester United and Manchester City. The city is also often referred to as the ‘Capital of the North’.
Manchester’s History: The name of the city has it origin in the Roman name ‘Mamucium’, which probably meant ‘breast town’! The city was inhabited even during the great medieval Roman rule in Europe. The popular tourist attraction the Manchester Cathedral was the creation of Thomas de la Warre, the lord of the manor. The premises now house a popular school of music and a library. Manchester’s history is synonymous with the Industrial Revolution that changed the methods of production with the sphere of influence of every industry and is responsible for the Renaissance that followed.
The changes in the textile industry worldwide spring from those initiated in Manchester! The city was also the first to witness the railway line connecting from Liverpool; the first ever! With a history so rich, it leaves little to imagination as to why the city of Manchester is on the top of every travel agent’s ‘most visited places in the world’. The foremost industrialized city in the world, Manchester has seen change and modernization before the rest of the world. Engineering and commercial set ups supporting a number of service based industries and even the banking and insurance segments of trade are all synonymous with the city of Manchester.
Manchester Weather: The city boasts of a beautiful weather and great outdoors. Manchester lies in a ‘bowl shaped’ area to the north of England, by the Pennine hills. With the mountain chain and plains within close proximity, the natural beauty of the land is no wonder at all. The rivers and proximity to the sea enhance the weather of this beautiful city.
